Why Mbappe and Kane won the "Gerd Muller" award instead of Ronaldo

29 October 2024

Controversy sparked over the exclusion of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo from the "Top Scorer of the Year" award known as the "Gerd Muller Award", which is awarded on the sidelines of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, despite his topping the season's top scorers list. The Portuguese tops the list of top scorers for the 2023-2024 season with 57 goals, 44 with Al-Nasr and 13 with the Portuguese national team, outperforming Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe (52) goals.

However, "France Football" magazine awarded the top scorer award for 2024, the "Gerd Muller Award", on the sidelines of its ceremony held yesterday evening, Monday, in the French capital "Paris", in favor of French Kylian Mbappe, the former star of Paris Saint-Germain and current Real Madrid, along with English Harry Kane, the striker for Bayern Munich.

Harry received the award, in the absence of Mbappe from the ceremony, due to Real Madrid's boycotting this year's ceremony, in protest against not awarding the Ballon d'Or  to Brazilian player Vinicius Junior and preferring the Spanish star of Manchester City over him.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Marca", the Portuguese did not receive this award, as the rules of this award stipulate that the cup is awarded to the best scorer at the European level, while Ronaldo participates in the Saudi League.
